In the know - Engadine

The Engadin (Rhaeto-Romanic "Engiadina"), possibly derived from "En", the Rhaeto-Romanic name of the river Inn) is a high valley in the Swiss canton of Grisons. It is one of the highest inhabited valleys in Europe and more than 80 km long. In our eyes, it is also probably the most beautiful valley in Europe. The valley appears for the first time by name as vallis Eniatina in a Latin source from 930. The Engadine philologist Robert von Planta suggested that the name could be explained by an unattested tribal name "Eniates". In this case it would be a derivation from the river name Inn (Aenus / Enus) with the Celtic suffix -ates to denote the inhabitants - Engadin thus meant "near the inhabitants of the Inn".

Big wide valley Celerina, mountains, blue sky

Since the valley at Celerina is open towards three points of the compass, Celerina, at 1,730 meters above sea level, records more hours of sunshine than the surrounding villages and over 300 sunny days a year. The color-blind Giuliano Pedretti (1924-2012), draftsman, sgraffito artist and sculptor set up his studio in Celerina in 1951. Celerina is popular as a perfect starting point for any activity and offers an original charm with the many typical Engadine houses in the village.

Settschient, Moische and Margunet were the names of the first bearded vultures released on June 5, 1991 in the Val da Stabelchod in the Swiss National Park. They had hatched in breeding stations in Vienna and Berlin and as young vultures were ready for release into the wild. The successful reintroduction of the extinct bird of prey in the Swiss Alps had begun. More than 100 years ago, the majestic bird had been exterminated. Today, the population in the Engadine is considered stable.

Mulegns is an almost forgotten little village that lies on the road to the Julier Pass. In the 19th century the post horses were changed in Mulegns, there were stables for up to 150 horses at the time. A witness to this era is the Posthotel Löwen. The opening of the Albula railway destroyed many jobs from 1903 onwards and resulted in only a handful of farmers still living in the village nowadays. The Post Hotel Löwe is shining in its original green hue as before. This white villa stands proudly at its new location and will be renovated next year. The ensemble of buildings by the Fallerbach will be colourful, elegant and cheerful. On the way to the Engadine, a stopover is worth the time! This special village has so much to tell - listen and discover. As we all know, the road becomes the destination, on your way to us, stop by and experience contemporary history up close.

THE VILLAGE, THAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT TRAVELLING

THE DIVERSITY OF THE ENGADINE

The Engadine has one strength: it fulfils alpine dreams. No matter of which kind. Especially in summer and autumn, the possibilities are endless: biking, hiking, wildlife watching. Climbing, surfing or playing golf.

The glacial mills of Cavaglia were worked by the Palm Glacier over thousands of years. Glacial water, debris and gravel have grinded huge holes in the hard rock. The access to the glacier mills is very simple: take the Rhaetian Railway over the Bernina Pass to the station Cavaglia. From there it is only a 10-minute walk. Admission is free. A contribution is voluntary.
